Driving Ability Test
(Part 2)

The practical test of driving ability lasts approximately one hour and consists of the Eyesight test, ‘Show Me/Tell Me’ and Driving Ability incorporating all the manoeuvres, you must pass all parts. You must show that you have a thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety awareness and you can apply them in practice.

The eyesight test
You must be able to read in good daylight, with the aid of glasses or contact lenses if worn, a motor vehicle registration mark containing letters and figures:
• 79 mm in height and 50 mm wide at a distance of 26.5 m
Or
• 79 mm in height and 57 mm wide at a distance of 27.5 m

If you do not pass the eyesight test, you will not be allowed to take the driving ability element. The test will be marked as a fail and will count towards your three attempts.

Safety questions
At the start of the test the examiner will ask you five questions on basic vehicle safety; three ‘Show Me’ and two ‘Tell Me’. If the candidate answers any questions incorrectly the examiner will mark the incorrect answer as a driving fault up to a maximum of four incorrect answers. Should all five questions be answered incorrectly then a serious fault will be recorded.

The components will be chosen from the following list: tyres, steering, brakes, lights, reflectors, direction indicators, audible warning device and the liquids used in the braking system, steering system, engine or elsewhere in the vehicle as a coolant, lubricant, cleaner or otherwise.

Test of driving ability
The test of driving ability is an advanced driving test and a very high standard of competence is required. You must satisfy the examiner on all of the following; expert handling of the controls, use of correct road procedure, anticipation of the actions of other road users and the taking of appropriate action, sound judgment of distance, speed and timing and consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users. You will also need to demonstrate expert handling in all five manoeuvres including the controlled stop.

The Standard
You are allowed six driving faults, should you obtain a serious or dangerous fault this will result in a fail. You may have 3 attempts at the part 2 test. If you are unsuccessful on your third attempt at part 2 you will need to wait 2 years from passing your part 1 before restarting the process again.

(End of Part 2)
